Chris Cortez - Awakenings “Arlington Park” has what sounds like saxophone work along with slender drum and percussion play. The rhythm is so winsome that one can envision dancing to this song while vacationing on some exotic enclave with an umbrella drink in hand. On “Territorial Imperative” what sounds the saxophone returns, but the tone is much deeper with a succession of lower notes. The drum work livens up the strain a tad, making this one song that you can easily shake your tush to. “Palmettos” has different instrumentation than the previous songs. It begins with guitar strumming so specific that listeners will be able to hear each chord individually. The added bonus of percussion gives a sweet appeal to the song and makes it one you can envision listening to on your MP3 player while you toddle along a stretch of beach relaxing and contemplating personal thoughts. On “Let the Cat Out” there is more buoyant guitar work melded with engaging percussion play that has an antsy tone, but it will make listeners groove to its speedy pace and superb instrumentation. “Awakenings” from Chris Cortez is an apt title for an album that will stimulate listeners with its skillful instrument play and jaunty rhythms. Your whole body will feel alive just listening to each and every song on this album Reviewer: Sari N. Kent |
