Now Playing - Everyday I Have The Blues From the CD Mum Is The Word.
281-812-7850 cortezguitar@earthlink.net

Chris Cortez and Friends is primarily a trio, but can be expanded to as many as 8 pieces.

The primary members are Chris on guitar and vocals, Glen Ackerman on electric and acoustic bass and vocals, and the newest member of the trio, Derrick James on drums.

Guests who regularly appear with the group have included saxophonists Woody Witt and Warren Sneed, keyboardists Matthew Reichl, Jose Miguel Yamal, and Ted Wenglinski, and drum/percussionists Joel Fulgham, Will Cruz and James Metcalfe.

Whatever the configuration, the group presents an eclectic blend of Latin jazz, swing, blues, and pop selections. A typical set includes a blend of instrumentals and vocals, led by Cortez' impressive guitar playing.

Chris has primarily focused on acoustic guitar for the last few years, choosing to set himself apart from the large crop of electric guitarists on the local scene. That decision turns out to have some distinct benefits.

In a restaurant setting that choice perfectly compliments the volume requirements of many venues, without inhibiting the intensity of the performance. In a concert setting, modern amplification techniques allow for a dynamic presentation where that technique and intensity can be even more on display, but delicate nuanced passages are not lost.

Song selection is not affected by this decision. There are many selections that one might normally associate with electric guitar, but Chris is not limited in that type of thought. Basically, everything is on the table. The results can be surprising. (sample song list)

The electric guitar hasn't been banished completely. Chris recently chose electric guitars on a project with NY bassist Harvie S, and electric guitars are featured on a new Cortez project, both slated for release in 2010.
